Omg...this is a very important piece because I witnessed something similar just with a kid this morning... As little as he was, the society and environment has made it weird for him to own his own narrative and defend it...I was able to correct his ideologies and now thank you for the word Self advocacy. Now...that's a conversation to have with people!🙌
Thanks a lot for this. Even though I'm not an advocate of LinkedIn blowing before now, I observed recently that when you tell that story of yours for the small wins, you'll see people that will challenge you to doing more and one way or the other, opportunities finds you. Opportunities might not reach those very very close to you that they might share with you if it's only those living in your room that knows how good you are. 😎😎
P.S: I still don't fancy the shout shout on LinkedIn though 🤪🤪
Very superb read! I agree with you entirely, though I must add that self advocacy works in mysterious ways. One of the best ways to boost or kill a business is through publicity. It works well for a business that's good, but proves fatal for a bad business. Imagine I advertise for rent/sale the beautiful house on my street where "boys carry in big bags of Ghana-must-go every night". The EFCC or police will likely visit the house before potential buyers/tenants do. I remember also while I was a law student, many of my close friends thought I was really brilliant but just not ambitious for great grades. They'll tell those who cared to listen how smart Hanif is, he just doesn't take education and grades seriously. Omo! I dey shut them up o cause I know I'm gifted with the aura of sounding smart rather than being actual smart, at lease book wise.
The point I'm trying to make is while it's a good thing to self advocate, it's best to develop the capacity first before advocating any self. I love that you made this point obvious.
Meanwhile, was it you that made it compulsory to subscribe to your newsletter before I can post comments or it's substack? Come and soro soke because substack says it pays for subscription. LOL.
This is so true, I've had a personal experience before, too. It was the prize-giving season at the end of SS2, and I was talking to a mate who was in the another arm of SS2 (so we were classmates, but not really classmates, you get?). And we had the following conversation:
B: are you the smartest student in your class?
Me: I don't know (Blowing my trumpet now: I was the smartest in my class)
B: You're humble, I thought you were going to say 'yes'.
Looking back, I should have owned it with my chest 😭. I rarely get the chance to say I'm the smartest or the best at something now.
Humility? 😂😂😂. Some people are so 'humble' that they even deflect compliments.
