I took a bus from Italy to Germany about two weeks ago, and took the same bus back after five days in Germany. And I couldn’t help but notice the stark difference in the way the immigration treated both trips.
While going to Germany, we had to go through Switzerland, and the immigration officers stopped us at the border of Switzerland, and checked every person’s document, same thing when we were crossing from Austria into Germany. However the return journey was a night bus and I had an extremely sound sleep from the beginning of the trip, till when the bus stopped to take a break just before entering Italy. No immigration checks whatsoever. And when I got home I started to wonder why, and I came to the same conclusion as you did. Illegal immigrants generally moved from Italy to Germany and other richer countries. If you were an illegal immigrant and you managed to get to Germany already, then definitely, you won’t take the risk of going down to Italy and lose the “greener pastures” you already got.
