Hi Hameed, How should one react if the company promises to review and increase one's salary later on but intend to start small?

Hi Wande. Honestly, I'm not sure. I'll say its better to get as high as possible a salary in the beginning because many (Nigerian) companies don't fulfill their promises. Besides the economy can dip, business can slow down during the span of the 6 months etc. Also, future employers may request for your previous pay slip and make you an offer based on that. If you really don't have an option, have them put it in writing (maybe in your offer letter) that the pay will be reviewed to a particular amount after a particular time. Hope this helps.

Haha. This is sooo for me! Most times,I charge based on impostor syndrome. I feel like "what do I even know really sef" or "maybe I wouldn't do it well" until my oldest sister told me that she knows people who get paid x5 of what I charge and they don't even write as good! I sha knew I had to up my negotiation game. Thanks a lot for this, Sir!

Thank you fir this newsletter, Hameed.

I found myself in a similar situation and i fell for it. Now, I'm regretting it.

I assented to being paid a meagre amount as an 'intern' for a job I'm really good at.

Okay so, the company said they couldn't hire me as a full staff because of ASUU strike and that the only 'help' they could offer me was to hire me as an 'intern'. Intern where nobody is teaching me anything. I basically do all the stuff that full staff are doing.

Even so, that money is meagre for an intern. I feel bad. I feel really bad.

However, thank you fir this great piece. I'll subscribe now.
